The greatest threat confronting the Nigeria economy today is its total dependence on oil and with the interplay of forces in the oil market our economy is really in shambles. Before the discovery of oil in Nigeria, agriculture was playing a pivotal role in the economy. Diligence and dedication were our virtues. Mindless acquisition of wealth was far from our psychic. At various levels, our leaders were disciplined and focused; there was sincere desire on the part of the people to contribute their quota in order to drive the economy. But that was then, when leaders were leaders and meritocracy was the order of the day as against mediocracy we have today.

I still recall the famous groundnut pyramid in the Northern Nigeria; how the west was more known for their cocoa produce and the Eastern Nigeria was associated with coal. That was then. But with the advent of oil all these virtues have been discarded as people go into government now for themselves and not for what they can do for the country. This in fact is the crux of the problem we have in Nigeria today. The instability in the system has destroyed our enterprise spirit. Decadence has pervaded the whole sector threatening our collective bargain as a people.

Every average Nigerian today has either lost a job or is about to lose one. There is an army of unemployed people in the country. Little wonder why people are under a lot of pressure. But should we allow poverty to grind us completely before we start taking proactive steps to do something right for us?

There is no other time for Nigerians to rethink their actions than now. Nigerians are noted for their resilience and can accomplish any given task, if properly motivated.
